Configure Connect with Any Calling Application
Use Connect with an unlisted desktop softphone by assigning its call input and output to the correct virtual devices.
Confirm the application can use Connect
A desktop calling application can usually work with Connect when it lets the user select a standard microphone and speaker. Install and open Connect first, confirm that the physical headset works, and verify that the virtual devices appear in the operating system. If the application is managed by an administrator, confirm that your account is allowed to change audio settings before beginning.
- Application: locate Audio, Sound, Devices, Voice, or Media settings.
- Input control: confirm that the menu can choose a microphone independently from the system default.
- Output control: confirm that the call speaker can be selected, especially for incoming translation.
- Baseline: record the current devices so they can be restored after the test.
Choose the device pair
The call device pair must match the direction Connect will translate. Use Connect Mic whenever outgoing speech passes through Connect, and use Connect Speaker only when incoming speech must also be processed. Keep ringtones and notifications on the physical headset when the application offers a separate alert device.
| Translation direction | Calling-app microphone | Calling-app speaker |
|---|---|---|
| Bidirectional | Connect Mic | Connect Speaker |
| Outgoing only | Connect Mic | Physical headset |
| Incoming only | Physical headset | Connect Speaker |
Configure an unlisted softphone
Application labels vary, but the underlying route is consistent. Open the softphone after Connect so it builds a fresh device list, choose the input and output required by the translation direction, and save the changes. Reopen the settings before calling because some managed applications silently restore an administrator-defined or system-default device.
- Launch the softphone and sign in with the production account or an approved test account.
- Open Settings, then find Audio Settings, Sound Settings, Devices, or a similar menu.
- Under Microphone or Input, choose Connect Mic when outgoing speech must be translated.
- Under Speaker or Output, choose Connect Speaker when incoming speech must be translated; otherwise keep the physical headset.
- Select Save, Apply, or OK, then close and reopen the settings to confirm the values persisted.
Handle application-specific controls
An unlisted softphone may separate call audio, ringtone output, default communications devices, and voice-processing controls. Change the active call path first and leave notifications on the physical headset unless the workflow requires otherwise. Use a stable baseline before testing automatic gain, echo cancellation, noise suppression, or vendor-specific voice enhancement.
- Prefer explicit in-app device selectors over changing the entire operating-system default.
- If the app has no selector, temporarily test the Connect virtual devices as system communication defaults, then restore the original defaults afterward.
- Disable one competing processing control only when a repeatable symptom points to it.
- Document the exact menu path for the team once the route is validated.
Validate the complete call
A saved device name does not prove that the live route works. Test the physical headset, Connect processing, any calling application audio path, and remote playback as one complete chain. Use the same account, browser or desktop client, network, and headset that will be used in production so the result reflects the real workflow.
- Run How I Sound? and confirm that the physical microphone reaches Connect clearly.
- Start a private test call and verify the active microphone and speaker inside any calling application.
- Press CONNECT-ON and confirm that the timer starts and live transcription responds.
- Speak a complete sentence, then ask the remote participant whether they hear the expected translated or natural signal.
- Test the reverse direction when using bidirectional or incoming-only translation.
Resolve common issues
Use the symptom to identify the layer that needs attention instead of changing every setting at once. Confirm the current device names, make one correction, and repeat the same short test. If the issue continues, record the any calling application version, operating system, selected devices, translation direction, and the exact point where audio stops.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Connect devices are missing | any calling application cached its device list | Open Connect first, then restart or reload any calling application. |
| The recipient hears natural speech | The physical microphone is active | Select Connect Mic in the active call. |
| Incoming translation is silent | The speaker bypasses Connect | Select Connect Speaker when the incoming path must be translated. |
| Speech is clipped or metallic | Competing audio processing | Disable one suppression, gain, or enhancement control and retest. |
Frequently asked questions
These answers cover the decisions most likely to change the any calling application result. Confirm the translation direction before applying a recommendation because outgoing-only and bidirectional calls do not use the same speaker route. Keep the last working configuration available so a failed adjustment can be reversed without disrupting the next call.
Can any calling application use Connect?
Many can if they expose standard microphone and speaker selectors. A controlled test is still required because some applications restrict virtual devices or force administrator-defined audio.
What if the application has no audio menu?
It may inherit the operating-system communication defaults. Test that route temporarily, record the previous defaults, and restore them after the call if the change is not intended system-wide.
Why do Connect devices not appear?
Open Connect first, confirm the virtual devices in the operating system, then close and relaunch the softphone so it refreshes its list.
Should I change the ringtone output?
Usually no. Keep ringtones and notifications on the physical headset while routing only the live call audio through Connect.
